The 2018 growing season is upon us!

With so many plants to choose from, where do you start? This article covers some of the newest plants on the market this year, and should hopefully give you some great ideas. Trendy and stunning, these picks are sure to add some dynamic pops of colour and texture to your garden. Read the list of our top new plants for 2018, on this week’s blog!

ARONIA LOW MOUND

This guy is small and compact and only grows 1-2 feet in height and width. It shows interest in each of the four seasons with white blossoms in spring attracting pollinators. It has glossy disease-free leaves in summer, showy red leaves in the fall and black berries in the early winter. This is one of the plants that was planted in the new parking lot on 4th and Seymour (The Old Daily News Building).

BETULA GOLDEN TREASURE

Also known as CESKY’S GOLD is extremely hardy so it will be a great plant for all regions of BC. The new growth is yellow with reds and oranges, the leaves will mature into a chartreuse for the rest of the summer. It will grow to be about 4 feet but adapts to pruning and shaping so it can even be grown as a small hedge.

ACER PALMATUM HUBBS RED WILLOW

This willow has long narrow purple/red leaves and is a compact grower with a bamboo like appearance. It has a fiery red/orange fall colour and is suitable for Zone 5/6.

new summer plants 2018 ideas inspiration

ARUNUS CHANTILLY LACE GOATSBEARD

This is a great plant for dry shade, it can grow 3 feet in height and up to 4 feet wide. It has a round form and creamy white blooms in the summer. It can also be a nice addition to planters.

DIANTHUS CHERRY VANILLA

A wonderfully fragrant plant for the front of the perennial border. It has double red blooms with ruffled petals and a light pink edge. It only grows 6-8 inches in height.

DIANTHUS CLASSIC CORAL

This beauty has double coral blooms and is a touch larger than the Cherry Vanilla. This will grow 8-10 inches in height and is also fragrant.

DIANTHUS RASPBERRY RUFFLES

A double raspberry pink bloom with a white edging on the petal. It grows 8-10 inches and is fragrant. Along with Cherry Vanilla and Classic Coral this new dianthus is a re-bloomer.

ECHINACEA LAKOTA SANTE FE

This new introduction has red blooms along with some blooms in red/orange and or pink/orange. It grows 12-16” and likes the full sun but will tolerate some shade.

HEMEROCALLIS RAINBOW RHYTHM

A stunning new addition, this daylily has large 6-inch dark purple blooms with a chartreuse throat and ruffled edges. It grows roughly 26 inches and will bloom mid summer.

HEUCHERA WILD ROSE

This coral bell has rosy red leaves with charcoal grey veins. Rosy pink blooms that come on burgundy stems. It prefers partial shade and is a compact grower with an approximate height of 8-10 inches.
